History

Shirkai Devi

Goddess worship in India goes back to prehistoric India. Archaeological remains from the cities of the Indus civilization (1600-1900 B.C.) include large numbers of crudely fashioned female clay figurines, generally called mother goddesses. Starting around 1300 B.C. a group of nomadic peoples who called themselves Aryas, or Noble Ones, became dominant in northern India. Their sacred literature was composed in Sanskrit and known as the Vedas. The Vedas reflected a world view that was overwhelmingly masculine. While gods became predominant as the Aryans settled in north India, archaeological excavations show that peasants in numerous villages continued to worship the mother goddess. As cosmic force Devi creates, annihilates, and recreates the universe. Of awesome appearance, she destroys demonic forces that threaten world equilibrium wielding weapons in multiple arms that testify to her ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously. This category includes her form as Durga, slayer of the buffalo demon; Kali; the emaciated Chamunda; and Devi herself. Devi is worshiped as a mother who always desires the well being of her children. Supplicants may request specific help: that a disease be healed, an examination passed, or a job secured. While some forms of Devi worship are common throughout India, others are regional. Worship of forms such as Draupadi, heroine of the Mahabharata and Radha, beloved of Krishna, are restricted to specific geographical locations. Temples and festivals for Draupadi are found in south India, while Radha is celebrated in the north.

About Us

History always begins with registering great victory tales. During the past era gone by declaring a war for cause of protecting religion or to establish one’s own territory depended on assessing the given situation. The dynasty of Rajeshirke is known to have recorded from 5th century onwards. Reference’s of Rajeshirke are found from 6th century onwards and is been recorded by historians. Historians have referred Rajeshirke as “A renowned name from Konkan Region”. The empire of Rajeshirke’s was spread all across Konkan Region & Deccan Plateau. Their able soldiers were deputed on Bhairavgad in South Konkan and on Vasota fort in district of Satara. Rajeshirke’s have the distinct credit of leaving their immense influence on forts like Raigad, Vishalgad, Panhala, Bhairavgad, Vasota & Sangameshwar. History pundits notify that Senapati of Adil Shahi named Malik Utujar invaded Vishalgad with a force of 7000 armed soldiers. On seeing this Shankarrao Rajeshirke & his brave warriors attached to Vishalgad marched towards these troops with naked swords in their hands and massacred the 7000 soldiers. In this battle Malik Utujar lost his life and thus the battle was won by the great Rajeshirke’s single-handedly. Prior to establishment of Swaraja raj by Chatrapati Shivaji RajeBhosle, Rajeshirke’s ruled the costal part of entire Malvan and Konkan region and foiled many attempts made by foreign invaders. Rajeshirke’s were also known to organize a well controlled and operate force of brave warriors popularly referred as Raje’smoothly. Protecting Swaraj, Donation to temples for regional cause, forming a force of brave warriors, protecting and taking care of their subject and governing a qualified people to operate disaster management team in their region were some of the exemplary work handled by Rajeshirke’s. The dynasty of Rajeshirke’s worked very close with Swaraj and with the great Chatrapati Shivaji Rajebhosle till Swaraj was in existence. But, unfortunately some historians misinterpreted the great work and spoiled their reputation of their holy relation with Swaraj. Rajeshirke’s were an important part in Raje Shivaji’s era who handled infantry to the core during battle. The sheer courage and of this “Gharana” was very much praised by the great Shivaji. Rajeshirke’s believed in Goddesses Shirkai Devi. No task was accomplished with her blessings. “Gadswamini” Shri Shirkai devi temple is still seen on the fort of Raigad known as Shrike family's devi. Gotra – Dynasty of Rajeshirke originates from “Suryavanshi Kshtriya Kul”. It’s also said lord Ram was born in this “Kul”. Historians have said that Rajeshirke belong to “ Gotra Vayagraha” where Vayagraha means means tiger ( Tiger also being “Vahan” of Shri Shirkai Devi”) Emblem of Rajeshirke Empire - The color of the throne is pure white with the flag having a picture of horse with a big umbrella attatched near to its saddle. Horse being main “Vahan” of Rajeshirke. Naval Force of Rajeshirke – Historians have noted that once Shankarrao Rajeshirke had 300 warships which guarded Arabian Sea. Force of Rajeshirke – Rajeshirke force comprised of Maratha soldiers which also had soldiers who hailed from parts of Europe, Africa & various other countries. Rajeshirke had a very big force of brave warrior which could protect the vast Konkan & Deccan Plateau. Padwal Dynasty (Gharane) – Its said that once a pregnant Rajeshirke lady gave birth to baby behind shrubs of “Padwal Tree (Snake Gourd). This incidence gave name of Padwal to the new born as the child was named as Padwal. Eversince, the honor of main priest of the temple of Shri Shirkai Devi remains with the Padwal’s.

Festival

Chaitra Poornima - During “Chaitra Maas” a mammoth “Jatra” is organized in Shirkoli. All Rajeshirke family across the nation throng this place to seek blessings of Shri Shirkai Devi. “Yadnya”, “Hom – Havan” is performed during this day. Maha Naivadyam (Prasad) is offered to Shri Shirkai Devi and is distributed as blessings of Devi. This festival is celebrated with much pomp & glory as this becomes a pilgrimage of all Rajeshirke parivar during this time of year.

Utsav Navratra (Dasera) – In the month of October Navratra and Dasera Utsav is celebrated in Shirkoli. This is done on a low scale as the approach road is not easily accessible due to poor condition of road post rains.

Visit/Lodging / Bording at Shirkoli - State transport buses ply from Swargate bus stand in Pune to Shirkoli. During rains its limited only up to Panshet. A stretch of 60 Km takes around 3 hours travel as 20 km stretch is a travel in hilly region.

In the year 1999 Padmashri Shri B.G.Shirke contributed money for construction of a dormitory having two attached rooms, a big hall, toilet, bathroom and is well equipped to accommodate 50 pilgrims here.
